Upgrading to Alike v4.0
When upgrading from earlier versions Alike to v4.0, there are several important things to know before you start running the installer. Below is a list of the most important things to consider beforehand, but as always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us directly.
1. Alike Free Edition has been retired as of v4.0.
2. Existing Alike v3.x installations cannot be directly upgraded to v4.0
3. Alike v4.0 now utilizes a per-host CPU Socket licensing model
4. Customers under maintenance will be grandfathered into the new licensing model, and are eligable for a full license conversion.
Alike Free
As of Alike v4.0, we have bid a fond farewell to our old friend, Alike Free Edition. We thank the many, many users of Alike Free, and appreciate the kind words and helpful feedback we've received over the years. To help Alike Free users with this transition, we have a upgrade path available for them, to gain a full license of Alike Standard. Please contact sales for more information.
A Fresh install
Due to the significant changes in the product, there will be no direct upgrade path from Alike v3.x to v4.0. Please do not attempt to perform an in-place upgrade of your existing Alike v3.x installation, instead you must perform a fresh installation of Alike-- either on a new Windows server, or by archiving your backup data, and uninstalling your Alike v3.x version before installing Alike v4.0. Please factor this into your upgrade planning accordingly.
Licensing Changes
To better align with industry standard licensing, Alike v4.0 will now be licensed on a per-CPU Socket basis, instead of the previous per-host basis. This change should make Alike's pricing more in line with other solutions, and will reduce confusion about our licensing system.
License Upgrading Procedure
Because of the licensing model change, we will grandfather existing customers of Alike who are currently under active maintenance contracts. This means we will convert your existing Alike v3.0 licenses to the equivalent number of v4.0 license needed to protect your existing environment. This will guarantee that you will continue to be fully protected with Alike going forward into v4.0.
In order to perform this license conversion, you must perform the following steps on your existing Alike v3.5 installation:
1. Download the Alike v4.0 license conversion tool (v1.1)
2. Extract the .zip archive to a temp folder on your Alike v3 Server. DO NOT extract to your Alike install directory.
3. Run the 'Mainttool.exe' program, and follow the prompts.
4. If the server has a connection to the Internet, you can automatically submit the report. Otherwise, email the report file to maintenance@quadricsoftware.com
5. IMPORTANT: Once you submit the report through the program or via email, please allow 24 to 48 hours for a response from Customer Service with your new license keys.
The download tool does not automatically assign new license keys. Your new keys must be manually assigned to ensure that your upgrade is complete and that your data is fully protected.
Please Note:
If you receive a database error running this tool, please upgrade to Alike v3.5.1.1, and re-run this tool.
Once the report has been received and processed, you will be receiving an email with your new Alike v4.0 license key(s). You will be given a grace period of 30 days until your previous Alike v3.x license keys are de-activated, allowing you time to migrate your systems.
