ADS Troubleshooting Guide

Introduction

The Alike ADS is simply a CIFS share that contains all of the Alike backup data. During operation, both the Alike services, and the ABDs will access and utilize the contents of the ADS. The ADS can live locally on the Alike server itself, or it can be remotely located on a NAS or storage device.

Potential ADS Issues

It is important to note that if the ADS is hosted local to the Alike server, the Alike services (Backup Scheduler and Data Vaulter) will access the ADS directly (eg. D:\alikeData\), while the ABD will access it via the network path (eg. \\hostserver\ads\).

However, if your ADS is located on a NAS or storage server, both the ABD and Alike services will access the ADS via the network share (eg. \\hostserver\ads\).

Nearly all of the problems that can arise with the ADS revolve around access to the CIFS share. Share and NTFS permissions, user access and security, and even domain policies can all interfere with Alike’s ability to read and write to the ADS.

Furthermore, any security software, such as anti-virus or anti-malware can cause serious problems with Alike’s ADS. It is recommended that all security software be configured to exclude the Alike ADS and installation folders to avoid errors and significant performance problems.

Checklist
  • CIFS share is configured correctly
  • NTFS and share permissions are read/write/create for the Alike user
  • The IP given for the ADS is accessable by the ABDs and Alike services
  • If the ADS has multiple IP address, the correct one is being used (DNS)
